How does yogurt work, and does it work

Yogurt is a lactic acid product that contains large quantities of bacteria useful for digestion. These microorganisms are probiotics and can have positive effects on health, such as improving the digestion process, as well as strengthening the immune system.

However, not a single yogurt can work miracles: it is impossible to ensure the normalization of digestion and protect yourself from seasonal colds, only by introducing it into your diet. In 2010, Danone had to pay an impressive fine, as it was not possible to provide significant scientific data confirming the fact that daily consumption of yogurt will improve the digestion process and help not to catch a cold.

Canadian scientists analyzed the results of 31 studies that examined the effects of probiotics on health. It turned out that probiotics can really cope with diarrhea and constipation, make digestion more regular, and keep blood cholesterol levels under control. However, emphasizes the head of the study, Dr. Mary Scourboutakos, almost all probiotics were tested in concentrations ten times higher than their content in food (including yoghurts), and most of the studies were sponsored by manufacturers of various products.

In general, it is quite obvious that yogurt is not a medicine, and it is impossible to cope with serious medical problems, for example, with constipation or diarrhea after a course of antibiotics, only with its help.

However, this does not mean at all that you need to give up the use of yogurt. The right food can be part of a healthy diet.

(Un) healthy snack

Not all yoghurts are created equal. It is often misleading for shoppers to say that the yoghurt of their choice is low in fat. Such a product is perceived as a dietary and healthier one. But there is a trap here, too. Usually, it is these yoghurts that contain a lot of sugar - fructose or, for example, cane sugar, can be responsible for the sweetness in it.

A standard 200 g jar can contain 5 or even 8 tablespoons of sugar, which, of course, negates all the potential benefits of such a product. A similar story is with yoghurts containing fruit fillings - usually nothing more than a delicious dessert that should not be overused.

When choosing low fat yogurt, it makes sense to take into account the results of one of the studies published in 2011. Scientists, whose work was presented at the annual congress of the European Respiratory Society, found that daily consumption of low-fat yogurt during pregnancy increases the likelihood of developing allergic reactions and asthma in future children by one and a half times.

All this indicates that it is definitely not necessary to demonize fatty yogurt, because such a product does not contain trans fats that are dangerous to the heart and health in general, which should really be removed from your diet.

What should be the right yogurt?

Proper yoghurt has a shelf life of no more than a week and does not contain colors, sweeteners or fruit additives. The presence of the latter in an already finished product does not have the best effect on lactic acid bacteria, and therefore, if you like yogurt with a filler, add it yourself immediately before use.

What is yogurt good for?

Yogurt can indeed be part of a healthy diet. It contains a lot of protein needed for muscles, a lot of calcium that is useful for bones - up to half the daily value, and is also a source of B vitamins, which are important for brain function and heart health.

One serving of yogurt will provide you with phosphorus, magnesium and potassium, the presence of which in the diet is also important for bones, heart, blood vessels and overall health. Several researchers point out that regular consumption of yogurt can help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis.

Natural yogurt with no added sugar keeps you feeling full: Several studies have shown that eating a serving of yogurt in the morning can reduce your daily calorie intake. This means that the introduction of yogurt into the diet is really useful for those who want to lose extra pounds or want to keep their weight under control.

Not suitable for everyone

Even the right yogurt may not be suitable for some of us. So, its use sometimes causes discomfort with lactose intolerance. Another reason to give up yogurt is milk protein intolerance, which causes allergies to all dairy products.

For those experiencing such problems, plant-based milk yoghurts are also a good source of protein. It should be remembered, however, that such products may contain excessive amounts of sugar, and therefore, when buying, you must carefully read the label. However, this applies to any product.
