Here's a surprise: British woman got pregnant during pregnancy

Is it possible to get pregnant during pregnancy? I bet you thought it was impossible? The British Rebecca Roberts, who, although she became pregnant for the first time, believed that she knew quite a lot about female physiology, thought similarly. Rebecca and her husband tried to become parents for many years - pregnancy came, and such that even the doctors were puzzled.

Here's a surprise: British woman got pregnant during pregnancy

How is this even possible?

In most cases, the onset of pregnancy does prevent the re-entry of sperm to the egg. This is due to the fact that the female body begins to synthesize hormones that block ovulation.

In addition, other factors interfere with re-fertilization: the penetration of sperm to the egg is impeded by a mucous plug, and for implantation into the wall of the uterus, there may not be enough space or hormones to facilitate this process.

However, ovulation does not always stop after pregnancy. In rare (very rare!) Cases, ovulation occurs, which means that the likelihood of fertilization remains.

This phenomenon is called superfetation. It is found in animals, but it is atypical for humans - only a few dozen such cases are known, and 39-year-old Rebecca Roberts has now joined their number.

Two conceptions in three weeks

She tried to get pregnant year after year until she finally got pregnant. Rebecca regularly went to the examinations and passed the necessary tests. During an ultrasound examination at 12 weeks, the doctor discovered that the woman was carrying not one, but two children. The doctor suggested that he somehow did not notice the second baby during the previous ultrasound, but the difference in the size of the developing children prompted the idea that this was something completely different.

It turned out that doctors are dealing with a rare phenomenon of superfetation, in which Rebecca's body, despite being pregnant, was capable of fertilization. Most likely, the reason for this phenomenon is the effect of the ovulation drugs that the patient was taking.

In general, there was first one, and then, three weeks later, the second pregnancy: both developed at their own pace. The woman did not bear twins, but children who were conceived in the course of two independent fertilizations - without IVF and other procedures.

Doctors began to monitor the pregnancy even more closely than before. They feared that the youngest child might not survive. When the pregnancy reached 33 weeks, the doctors decided to give birth - further bearing was already dangerous for the youngest child due to problems with the umbilical cord.

The girl, Rosalie, spent 95 days in neonatal intensive care, and her brother Noah only 3 weeks. At birth, Noah weighed about 2 kg, and Rosalie weighed 1.7 kg.

Later, the children were discharged home, they are developing normally, and the doctors do not notice any disorders related to their health. Rosalie quickly caught up with her brother and now can do everything that he does.

“I have super twins,” says Rebecca Roberts. "I look at them every day and I think I am very lucky."

She said that she always wanted a baby, year after year trying to get pregnant. When pregnancy finally came, the Universe awarded the spouses with two babies at once. “This is something that was really worth the wait,” she said.

Doctors note that the case of Rebecca Roberts is also notable for the fact that the children were conceived three weeks apart - this is perhaps the largest interval between two conceptions, which is described to date.

A small number of cases of superfetation have been reported in the medical literature. This phenomenon is rare, but it is possible that it occurs a little more often than is commonly believed: in most cases, the difference between conceptions is small, and therefore it is simply impossible to detect it during an ultrasound scan, it is believed that a woman is simply carrying twins.

Pregnancy is not always easy for women - some wait even longer than Rebecca. We have already talked about those who gave birth after 55 years - someone became, for example, the mother of four children at once. Getting in shape after childbirth is another daunting task. Look at those who did it: these women have done an impressive job on themselves and achieved great results.
