If you have or have had cats, you are probably wondering if they respond to lovingly chosen names. Of course, there are situations (for example, when it comes to food) when cats perfectly understand what their name is. But there are times when they seem to be completely unaware that you need something from them. Japanese scientists decided to find out how things are in reality.

Meow, I'm listening: scientists have figured out if cats know their names

A recent study from the University of Tokyo used several methods to assess the behavior of cats. The authors tested animals living in families and cat cafes by playing various sounds. They were recorded for each cat by the owner or temporary owner.

One of the sounds is the cat's own name, others are Japanese nouns or the names of other cats. Scientists came to the house and reproduced sounds when the owners were not in sight. First came four random words, then a name.

The idea behind the study is that cats presumably get used to hearing words in order. Habituation is a form of learning in which the brain responds less and less often to a stimulus that is constantly repeated. Accordingly, cats react most strongly to the first word, and then the reaction dies out. They prick up their ears, turn their heads, meow or wiggle their tails, and then listen less attentively. And if you call the nickname at the end, then they will react poorly.

But in fact, cats showed the strongest reaction specifically to their names, and not to the words in front of them. The same thing happened in the second phase of the experiment, when they were called not by the voice of the owner, but by a stranger. This means that cats are able to distinguish the address to themselves from other words, based on the sound!

So the next time you ask the cat to get off the table and he won't react, you should know: he hears everything, just ignores.
