What is perm hair

Permed hair is a salon procedure that transforms straight strands into curls, curls and curls. The master applies a special composition and winds the strands on curlers of the selected diameter.

The task of the hairdresser is to fix the curl so that it does not straighten for a long time. An acidic or alkaline fixative is used during perm. These substances soften the hair tissue, and they are ready to take any shape. Let's see what types of perm are, how it affects the condition of the strands and how long the result lasts.

Perming hair at home

Many women are interested in how to curl their hair at home. When carrying out the procedure yourself, you need to soberly assess the risk to your hair and choose the right composition. So, with thin and fragile strands, acids are not recommended. In addition to the actual curling product, you will need:

  • plastic curlers of different diameters in the amount corresponding to the density of your hair;
  • two mirrors to provide yourself with an overview of the entire surface of the hair from the front and back;
  • two bowls for the chemical composition;
  • plastic hairbrush with sparse teeth;
  • two foam sponges;
  • rubber gloves;
  • drape to protect clothing;
  • measuring capacity;
  • towel;
  • hairdressing cap.

The home curling procedure takes about two hours, so please be patient! If you follow the instructions carefully, the result will definitely please you. How to perm your hair at home?

  1. First, check if your home curling product is right for you. Apply it on one strand, hold for the minimum time according to the instructions and remove the curlers. If you are satisfied with the result, the product can be used to curl all hair.
  2. If you have coarse hair, you can wash it before curling. Owners of thin strands, on the contrary, are not recommended to wash their hair before the procedure, since the fatty film protects the curls from drying out.
  3. Divide the hair into sections and separate them from each other with hairpins. Let the strands be smaller so that the curls are clear and do not exceed the size of the curlers.
  4. A short haircut during a perm at home is first treated with the composition, wound, and then the product is applied twice more. The medium length is first wound and then moistened with a hair curler. On a long head of hair, home curling is performed as follows: the composition is applied to the lower part of the hair, the strands are wound on bobbins and only then the entire length is processed.
  5. When all hair is wrapped and soaked in a chemical composition, put on a cap and leave for 20-40 minutes (according to the instructions). Unfold and check the curling result.
  6. If the curls have already become tight and springy, it's time to wash off the composition with warm water. In this case, the curlers do not need to be removed, and those that you removed to check the result, return back.
  7. Dry the hair lightly with a towel and a sponge, apply the fixative from the home curling set.
  8. After 5 minutes, treat the strands with fixative again.
  9. Wait another 5 minutes and wash off the composition with water without shampoo, rinse the strands with vinegar.
  10. Towel dry and apply after perm.
  11. Blow dry your hair with a diffuser to maintain the shape of the curls or let it dry naturally.

Permed hair: types

Depending on the type and quality of your hair, you need to choose the right curling method. Let's figure out what are the pros and cons of each technique.

Acid and amino acid curling

Modern acid perm for hair is much more gentle than the procedure that was carried out in Soviet hairdressing salons. Having made a perm, our mothers and grandmothers risked getting something on their heads that resembled a bird's nest. The quality of the hair was out of the question. Today, hair curlers contain thioglycolic acid for a long time, which softens the structure of the strands and makes them pliable, so the master can easily give the desired shape.

Amino acid hair curling is considered quite delicate in comparison with the previous method. The composition of the drug, as is clear from the name of the procedure, includes amino acids and proteins. These ingredients help restore the balance of the hair after chemical exposure. Amino acid perm is suitable even for colored and damaged hair.

Alkaline perm

Alkaline curling products contain ammonium thioglycollate, which makes the curls flexible and allows them to form curls of the desired diameter. The result of an alkaline curling of hair lasts up to 2-3 months. This technology helps to achieve natural, bouncy curls. The method is also called cold curling because it does not require heat treatment.

Neutral perm

Preparations for this method of curling hair are pH neutral, which means that the hair will not be excessively exposed to both acids and alkalis. Neutral chemicals are suitable for all hair types. The effect lasts an average of 3 months.

Chemical biowave

The components of chemical biowaving products are as close as possible to the composition of the hair. They do not contain acid, ammonia or hydrogen peroxide, so the strands do not dry out, do not stiffen or break.

Silk perm

Silk perm keeps hair looking well-groomed, resilient, shiny and elastic. Stylists recommend it to owners of fine hair. Hard strands do not lend themselves to such a gentle composition.

Japanese perm

The Japanese hair perm has been patented by the Goldwell professional brand. This method allows you to give the strands the desired shape as gently as possible. The composition of the drug includes the intercellular substance matrix, as well as betaine, keratin, beta-cystine. Approximately 3-5 months after the Japanese curling, the hair begins to unravel, and this happens quite naturally, and the hairstyle retains its aesthetic appearance.

Perm for medium hair

To create curls at medium length, stylists recommend several methods. This is primarily carving and root chemistry. But if you wish, you can make a large perm. Let's consider the features of each method in more detail.

Carving is a light curling of hair that looks stylish and natural. The gentle composition acts only on the surface of the hair, without penetrating into the deep layers. It does not harm the strands, creates the effect of density and looks great on bob, bob and cascade haircuts.

Hair curling allows you to add volume locally. As a rule, hair lacks splendor at the roots. A root perm for medium hair will liven up your styling without having to tame your haircut every day.

Perm for short hair

Short haircuts are suitable for root and neutral hair curls, as well as biowave.For owners of short hairstyles, slightly curled ends will go very well. Large curls will give an elegant look, and small curls will look perky and playful. Carving and acid perm for short hair will help bring all kinds of curls to life.

Perm for long hair

Long-haired girls can choose springy curls or large waves. A neutral or acidic perm for long hair will help to get fine curls, and carving is suitable for light curls.

Permed hair for large curls

Large waves are curled on curlers with a diameter of 56-66 mm. A light curling of your hair will look great if you cascade your hair first. Voluminous curls are suitable for girls with an oval face shape and large features. If you have a round face, a combination of large curls at the roots and small curls at the ends is the best option - cone-shaped curlers come in handy for this. Perming hair with large curls is not recommended for owners of thin, sparse strands - the desired volume will not work.
