Academy Award nominees have been announced by the American Film Academy. Before the ceremony, there is time to see all 9 films presented in the Best Film nomination and to place bets.
12 years of slavery
The slave-owning past and everyday racism are a sore subject for the United States, and among the Oscar-nominated films of different years there are many films dedicated to the oppression of the rights and freedoms of the black population of America. "Chauffeur Miss Daisy", "Mississippi on Fire", "Ghosts of the Mississippi", "The Servant" - these and many other films, lynching the racial prejudices of Americans, have won awards and nominations in their time. Of course, the Academy could not ignore the epic drama "12 Years of Slavery" based on the real story of the stolen and illegally sold free African American Solomon Northup.
The leading actor, 36-year-old Chiwetel Ejiofor, drew a lucky ticket and received his own nomination in the category "Best Actor", and 31-year-old Mexican actress Lupita Nyong'o, for whom the role in "Bondage" was only the third work on the screen, shines on red carpet awards of all kinds, establishing itself as a new style icon.
Another film adaptation of real events on the list of nominees is a film with Tom Hanks in the title role. Scandals have already ripened around the picture: the sailors of the Maersk Alabama container ship, who refused to sign a non-disclosure contract for their version of the event, ridiculed the cinematic image of their captain, who, according to Hollywood scriptwriters, heroically surrendered to the Somali pirates in exchange for the freedom of his crew. According to the participants in the story, Captain Richard Phillips was the culprit in the pirate attack, as he led the ship too close to the shores of Somalia, and after the attack he was completely passive. But the chief engineer of the ship, Mike Perry, hid the crew, turned off the power to the ship and fought back the pirate leader. However, the name "Mechanic Perry" does not sound so heroic, so we still watch a film about the captain and make allowances for the artistry and imagery of the cinema.
Leonardo DiCaprio and other stars who played couples in movies, but in real life hated each other
Claire Danes became the partner of the Hollywood handsome Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie "Romeo and Juliet". Thousands of girls envied Claire, dreaming of being in her place, but she herself dreamed of running away from the set as soon as possible. DiCaprio constantly teased a colleague, trying to relieve tension. The actress quickly got tired of his practical jokes. Leonardo brought his partner to tears, the couple disrupted the shooting with constant scandals. Initially, Claire was supposed to play the role of the main character in "Titanic", but the girl politely refused.
Dallas Buyers Club
For the Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto once again embarked on an extreme experiment with his own weight. The artist once put on over 30 kilograms for the role of Mark Chapman, the killer of John Lennon, in the movie "Chapter 27". And this time, Leto lost 13 kilograms, and his colleague Matthew McConaughey lost 22 kilograms for filming.
The guys play HIV-infected organizers of the clandestine clinic "Buyers Club", which distributes unconventional drugs for AIDS patients.
The first futuristic drama, where a woman is not just the main character, but also practically alone draws on the entire film. Shading Sandra Bullock, George Clooney disappears into the depths of the Universe at the 20th minute of the film (the hosts of the Golden Globe joked about this episode very sarcastically), after which the heroine Bullock single-handedly starts the spaceship against the background of incredibly realistic space and at the same time keeps the viewer in suspense until last minute. It is surprising not only the choice of a woman as the main character, but also the choice as this very woman of Sandra Bullock, who has long established herself as an actress of melodramas and romantic comedies. Not everyone remembers that 4 years ago Bullock already received an Oscar for her work in The Invisible Side, and this year the actress has a second nomination in the same category for Best Actress.
What now seems wild, in the middle of the 20th century was not exactly the norm, but a common story: a young Irish woman, Philomena, who gave birth to a son out of wedlock, is taken away from her child, and the "harlot" herself is sent to "re-education" in a monastery, where she suffers humiliation (the same theme, but much more harshly reveals the drama of 2002 "Sisters of the Magdalene"). The matured and aged heroine, played by Judi Dench, has been trying to find a son all her life, and she is helped in this by the experienced journalist Sixsmith, who specializes in the sinister role of the institution of the church in broken human destinies.
Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lawrence and even Robert De Niro on the backing vocals - one of the main Oscar contenders has an impressive cast. And American Scam director David Owen Russell shot the award-winning and festival-winning tragicomedy My Boyfriend is Crazy last year, starring Cooper and Lawrence, which won its first Oscar for this work. The film has already won a Golden Globe for Best Comedy Film, and the producers are rubbing their hands in anticipation of an even bigger fish.
The only film on the list of Oscar nominees without first-rate stars and no drama in the plot: an elderly alcoholic wins a million dollars, but does not want to go on the long journey from Montana to Nebraska to win on his own. His son does not believe in this lottery, but does not refuse to help his father get to the mythical money. Travel, as you might expect, becomes a way for father and son to get closer and understand each other.
The wolf of Wall Street
The black comedy "The Wolf of Wall Street" was banned in some Asian countries for obscene language and explicit scenes, but there is no room for prudes on the Oscar jury - and here is a picture among the nominees. The leading actor Leonardo DiCaprio and his never received, despite all the services to the cinema, "Oscar" became the talk of the town, and therefore the interest in the film is special. The film will be released in Russia on February 6, and then it will be possible to evaluate the promiscuity of the heroes on their own. By the way, the actress Margot Robbie, who plays the lover of the hero DiCaprio, inspired Hollywood producers. that they without hesitation pushed Amanda Seyfried, approved for a role in the project "Z for Zachariah", and invited the 23-year-old starlet to work.
Fantastic melodrama by Spike Jones, author of the drama Where the Monsters Live, starring Joaquin Phoenix. The phoenix in the picture is surrounded by Hollywood beauties: Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde. And in the credits, Scarlett Johansson is indicated, who at the same time never appears in the frame. The actress gave a voice, in fact, to "her", an operating system with artificial intelligence, fulfilling any user wish. Funnily enough, Johansson won the Rome Film Festival Award for Best Actress.
